Jubilee 1952 Day in Furlong Centre
As part of the town’s weekend of Royal Jubilee celebrations the
Furlong Centre in Ringwood is staging a day of lively fun and
nostalgia with a look back at 1952, the year Princess Elizabeth became
Queen.
In the Furlong on June 1st from 10.30 a.m. to 4.00p.m.
there will be jiving demonstrations with invitations for everyone to
join in. There will be skiffle and early rock n' roll interspersed
with Glen Miller and the Big Band sound. There will be fashions of the
fifties modelled by local youngsters. The Big Little Theatre school
dressed in bobbysoxer style will be singing the 50’s songs. A
display of newspapers from the time will show the death of the King
and the Princess’s return from Treetops in Kenya to take up the
reins of monarchy. The Forest Forge Youth Theatre enacting 50’s
scenes and performing exuberant dance routines. New Forest School of
Dance will also be giving lively jiving exhibitions. There will be
pre-decimal coins, a 50's Wolsey car, and motor bike and other
memorabilia.
Come along, join in and be reminded of what we were wearing, reading
and dancing to in the early 50’s, or come along and marvel at some
genuine living history experienced by your parents or grandparents.
Memorabilia of the early 50’s very welcome. If you have any meat or
sugar ration books, any original 50’s outfits, any Coronation mugs,
or souvenirs, elderly Oxo cubes or Marmite jars, or packets of Tide
washing powder. Please let Belinda Charlton know, as she would love to
exhibit them. Just after the war there was a revolution in the kitchen
with new kitchen gadgets so if you have an original copper for
washing, or washboard and mangle or a very early washing machines and
carpet cleaners, we would love to exhibit them. The same goes for
radios, TVs and record players. . In fact, anything from that era that
will take us back to the post war simpler life or entertain and
instruct the youngsters of today who will wonder at our quaintness.
