FRENCH KICKERS WITH SPANISH STYLE
A hot continental sun beamed down upon the Furlong's European Day in Ringwood
last Friday (15th August 2003). Hundreds flocked to the Centre to watch some
Gaelic, Iberian and Teutonic entertainment. There was the Gendarme straight out
of the TV sit com "Allo Allo", there was the man with the Squeeze box
who had more than a whiff of the Eiffel Tower about him. The stylish Spanish
dancers Stephen Bishop and Jules Taylor stamped and clicked Flamenco throughout
the day. They had even thought to bring their own wooden flooring to produce the
correct clicking sounds with their feet.
The Can-Can dancers were probably the hit of the day. Five girls from the New
Forest School of Dance tirelessly dancing in the hot sunshine kicking up their
legs, cart wheeling and showing their surprisingly long knickers. The girls were
aged 13 to 18, and said they had enjoyed the day thoroughly.
There was the European Dog show where visitors were invited to match the dog
breed with the correct country of origin. It was a popular competition with ten
breeds having to be matched to their European countries, but surprisingly no one
got it all right.
The Ringwood Mayor Cllr Michael Thierry announced that the first six correct
answers were to receive six £10 Furlong shopping vouchers, but the organisers,
the dog rescue charity Happy Dogs, would take home the entry papers to study
them to find the six that got the most answers right. Winners will receive the
shopping vouchers by post.
Money was raised to help the charity Happy Dogs and BBC Children in Need.
Said organiser Belinda Charlton "It was an amazingly good day, very
relaxed with a real Continental atmosphere tinged with a buzz of
excitement."
