Wizards Fly in for Harry Potter Competition
Harry Potter came to Ringwood at the weekend when 15 young wizards and one owl flew
into the Furlong Centre on their broomsticks for the Harry Potter look-alike competition
at the Furlong Bookshop where the new book, Goblet of Fire went on sale.
Tony Martin, the bookshop owner had the difficult job of judging the young wizard and
Harry Potter's owl Hedwig. Worried that a spell would be cast upon him, he decided to give
prizes to all of the bespectacled Harry Potters and gave the owl first prize.
The winners of the competition were 1st prize Jade Smith 7 years from Ringwood, who was
the owl, 2nd prize to Rebecca Fox, 11 years from Orchard Close and 3rd prize to Carla
Bradbury, 11 years of Alderholt. They were presented with £25 book tokens, all the other
contestants got £5 book tokens.
Said Tony Martin: "By giving prizes to all our contestants I am hopeful that I will
not be turned into a frog, but of course I could still become a Boggart. I think Harry
Potter is an excellent character. He is a strong believer in good triumphing over evil and
a good example to children."
To celebrate the occasion he and his staff all wore the scar of Voldermont on their
foreheads and the thick pebble glasses as worn by Harry Potter.
During the morning the Furlong bookshop sold 300 copies of the new Harry Potter book at
£10.99, this was £4 cheaper than the recommended price.Throughout the country bookshops
are expecting to sell a record breaking 250,000 hardback copies over the next three days
with a million copies being printed. In America 3.8 million copies of the book are
expected to be sold and 500,000 in Australia and Canada.
